The centerpiece of the recreation area is Whiskeytown Lake, a 3,200-acre reservoir created by Whiskeytown Dam in 1963. The lake is renowned for its exceptionally clear water, which maintains excellent visibility even at significant depths. This clarity, combined with the lake's scenic mountain setting, makes it one of Northern California's premier water recreation destinations.

The Camden House, El Dorado Mine, and Tower House Historic District preserve remnants of the 1850s gold mining boom. Whiskeytown supports diverse wildlife including black bears, mountain lions, deer, wild turkeys, and over 200 bird species. The area encompasses multiple ecosystems from riparian zones along streams to oak woodlands and coniferous forests at higher elevations. Spring wildflower displays are particularly spectacular throughout the recreation area.
