About Whiskeytown National Recreation Area

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area encompasses 42,000 acres of rugged mountains, pristine wilderness, and the crystal-clear waters of Whiskeytown Lake. Located just 8 miles west of Redding, California, this protected area offers year-round recreation opportunities and serves as a gateway to the natural beauty of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

Whiskeytown Lake

The centerpiece of the recreation area is Whiskeytown Lake, a 3,200-acre reservoir created by Whiskeytown Dam in 1963. The lake is renowned for its exceptionally clear water, which maintains excellent visibility even at significant depths. This clarity, combined with the lake's scenic mountain setting, makes it one of Northern California's premier water recreation destinations.
